La Zenia, Orihuela Costa, Complete Guide

La Zenia is a small urbanization in Orihuela Costa, belonging to the province of Alicante, Valencian Community.

Mainly made up of villas and chalets built near its two beaches and a little further from the coast where are semi-detached villas and low-rise apartments.

La Zenia has a small surface compared to the rest of the populations, only 1.9 km², but despite this, it is the one with the highest number and quality of services and facilities in the southern part of the Costa Blanca, not few visitors have decided over time to definitively establish their residence in this town, but the numbers each year multiply exponentially with the arrival of tourists and visitors thanks to its great popularity.

How to get to La Zenia by road?

You can get to La Zenia through the N-332 road towards Cartagena if you come along the coast from Alicante or Torrevieja and if you come from the area of Cartagena or the Mar Menor, you can also access it via the AP-7 motorway, (exit 763), when leaving the motorway finding a roundabout just next to the Zenia Boulevard Shopping Center, at this roundabout you have to take the direction of La Zenia.

How far is La Zenia from the airport?

La Zenia is very well connected with either Alicante-Elche airport (51 km) or Corvera airport in Murcia (53 km).

Can I get to La Zenia by train?

La Zenia is exactly equidistant between the two train stations, the Balsicas-Mar Menor railway station, in the Murcia region is 29 km away, and the Orihuela railway station is 31 km away.

La Zenia has a healthy Mediterranean microclimate, the main characteristics are very low annual rainfall and an average of 325 days of sunshine per year, with an average annual temperature of + 19.3 ° C.

Geography and History of La Zenia

For centuries these lands were dedicated to cultivation, both rainfed and irrigated and there was only one farmhouse that had a "blackberry raft", hence the Zenia house, "aceña", next to the road that connected San pedro del Pinatar with Torrevieja.

The first residential construction to appear in the area was of an aviation captain who had an Ibizan-style chalet built near the farmhouse.

Back in the 60s, that farmland next to La Zenia and the blackberry raft was sold to a man from Cabezo de Torres, (Murcia), for 1 million pesetas. From there, the following constructions that were carried out were the Hotel La Zenia and the restaurant La Mirada, both on the cliff that separates the two beaches of the town, after the order of October 31, 1966 was approved, by which The Tourism Promotion Plan was granted, obtaining the declaration of La Zenia Tourist Interest Center.

The orography of La Zenia is characterized by a low and relatively flat topography, typical of most of the beach places on the Iberian Peninsula, with the only exception of the promontories where the Servigroup La Zenia Hotel and the La Mirada Restaurant are located and which are the only major landforms in the area.

Facilities in La Zenia

This is where this locality earns integers with respect to the rest of the southern populations of the Costa Blanca, and it is the place per square meter where the greatest number of services and facilities are concentrated.

It is the Home of a 4-star hotel and of the La Zenia Shopping Center, which is one of the largest shopping centers in the entire Mediterranean basin, with more than 150 stores. As well as we should mention the best beachfront restaurants in Orihuela Costa, "La Mirada" and next to it you can find other large commercial, medical and sports areas, multitude of bars and restaurants, schools and institutes.

There is also a bus service with stops in La Zenia and that communicate with the rest of towns as well as with the cities of Torrevieja or Alicante.

The distance to two of the most famous golf courses on the Costa Blanca is just 5 or 10 minutes away by car, such as the Campoamor Royal Golf Course and the Villamartín Golf Course.

What to do in La Zenia

Although La Zenia is famous for its effervescent commercial activity, it is also true that moving just a little away from the national road, N-332, inland, or towards the coast, everything becomes different - a haven of peace and tranquility.

Another of the biggest advantages of La Zenia is its beaches, it has two beaches, known as La Zenia Beach, or “del Bosque”, and Cala Cerrada, both with blue flag, the first is ideal for childrens, since it is a beach with more than 100 meters of width of fine sand, protected from the strong waves and the entrance to the water is done in a gentle way with very little slope.

As we have previously mentioned, the visit to La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Center is almost obligatory, since in addition to its more than 150 stores and everyday activities for a whole family.

Properties in La Zenia

As in all the towns on the coast with a long tourist tradition also in La Zenia, there are two areas with completely different urban identities, on the one hand, there are the beachfront properties, to the east of the N-332, a large, one or two floor independent villas on private plots of a size ranging from 300 to 800 m2.

The more modern and newer style properties in La Zenia are built a little bit further from the coast.

With a few exceptions, properties for sale in La Zenia tend to be low-rise, and the area offers a wide selection of affordable townhouses, apartments and luxury villas.

It is important to note that today there are very few undeveloped plots left in the urbanisation, which means that if the clients are willing to build their dream home in Spain, they should buy an old resale property, demolish it and start to build their new and modern home.
