Geography and History of a Mil Palmeras

The history of Mil Palmeras, although it may seem that it is relatively recent, dates back to the 1st and 2nd centuries BC, since there was an open pit quarry in the area that was exploited by the Romans. During this time this quarry was used for the extraction of rock for large constructions and there are indications that these stones were used for the creation of the Via Augusta that crossed the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, the visit of the remains of this quarry, which today are located on the coast just at the high tide line, is interesting.

Recently, and well into the 1960s, the Mil Palmeras area was just a beach away from the town where some fishermen stranded their boats after their catches. From the urban development promoted by tourism, a small urbanization was created that, as new ones emerged, ended up giving it its own identity. Today we can find in this urban center all kinds of accommodation and restaurants, as well as bars, cafes and shops.

With just a maximum altitude above sea level of 20 meters, Mil Palmeras is plagued with large areas of great ecological and landscape value. Its three beaches are rated as one of the most beautiful on the Costa Blanca, wide with fine sand where is possible to find various ecosystems or the rocky barrier that, as a reef, emerges in sections to the surface where the tips of the rocks overlap with holes and cavities that many fish and marine fauna take advantage of to establish themselves.

Mil Palmeras was favored after Pilar de la Horadada stopped being a district of Orihuela to get its own town hall. The urban and tourist development was increased exponentially, especially through second residences in the tourist field, little by little, larger real estate developers moved to the area during the years 2001 and 2002 to offer higher quality properties for sale and more affordable.

Although the new construction works have transformed the urban landscape of the place, it is true that there are two completely different areas, the oldest part basically urbanized with apartments and bungalows known in the area as “the Vikings” and the area of residential neighborhoods of single-family villas with much more space between neighboring properties.

The newer style buildings offer apartments in luxurious developments with all kinds of services and amenities and villas on inevitably smaller and more manageable plots. These new properties for sale typically require less maintenance than older style properties and are built to meet the latest construction standards.

Thanks to a well-designed and thoughtful urban plan, the newest part of the town is well developed, interspersed with parks and green areas that City Hall workers maintain.
