Founded in 1972, designed and built under the supervision of the Californian golf course architect, Mr. Robert Dean Putmann, it was inaugurated in June of that same year and since then has welcomed numerous world-renowned players attracted by the complexity of its greens, such as: Severiano Ballesteros, José María Olazabal, Ian Woosnan, and Sam Torrance. It has also hosted several internationally renowned championships, such as: the Open Mediterranean Volvo European Tour of the P.G.A. in 1997, and the Challenge European Tour Circuit of the P.G.A., twice.
The construction of Villamartín began in 1970 and the area has become a cosmopolitan urbanization, with about 1,500 apartments, bungalows and villas. The main inhabitants are from Western Europe and the majority are English speaking.
The geography is moderately undulating, with low hills and gentle slopes throughout the area, although it is somewhat warmer than the coastal areas, due to its inland location, it is less prone to the effects of strong winds from the sea.
